The R&D team came to me with a Bluetooth-enabled caliper that would enable an aircraft maintainer to measure the brake wear pin on an aircraft and transmit the data via Bluetooth to a phone application. This task was typically done via a visual inspection and numbers were transferred to a written log. This tool enabled the maintainer to take the measure using the caliper and have the measurement transferred via Bluetooth to the mobile application.
My team was tasked with designing and developing the mobile application. I worked with a small team of one full-time developer and a software engineering intern to create this application.
The team shipped us a prototype of the caliper for us to develop and test the application. We found a small nail was the right length and width to emulate a brake wear pin and used that for testing the device.
